Past Tense Conversation
Use of “Did”.
“Did” is to be used in the past tense in English at the start of the sentence before the subject to make interrogative sentence. Did is used in both form as regular and irregular verbs in English. Do and does is used in present tense, but did is used in past tenses like.
Present: Do they live in the UK?
Past: Did they live in the UK?

Use of “ Was and Were”
Was and were are past tenses verbs. Was is used with I, he, she, it.
Examples:
| 1. I was in wedding hall last night. | میں گزشتہ رات شادی ہال میں تھا |
| 2. He was in bed at nine o’ clock. | وہ نو بجے بستر پر تھا |
| 3. Sara was her friend's house until ten’o clock. | سارا دس بجے تک اپنے دوست کے گھر تھی |
| 4. It was raining | بارش ہو رہی تھی |
Were is used with first and third person plural in past tenses.
Examples:
| 1. You were in the city yesterday evening. | تم گزشتہ شام شہر میں تھے |
| 2. The boys were in the hostel. | لڑکے ہاسٹل میں تھے |
| 3. They were singing and dancing. | وہ گا رہے تھے اور ناچ رہے تھے |
Was / Were used in conversation:
| John: Hi, Smith. | ہائے سمتھ |
| Smith: hello John. | ہیلو جان |
| John: Were you out for playing yesterday evening? | کیا تم گزشتہ شام کھیلنے سے پہلے باھر تھے |
| Smith: Yes, I was. | ہاں میں تھا |
| John: Were you not singing while cooking? | کیا تم نہیں گاتے تھے جب تم پکا رہے ہوتے تھے |
| Smith: No, sir, I was | نہیں جناب میں ایسا نہیں کرتا تھا |
| John: Was Sara singing while cooking her meal? | کیا سارا گا رہی تھی جب وہ کھا نا پکا رہی تھی |
| Smith: No, she was just cooking. | نہیں وہ صرف کھانا پکا رہی تھی |
| John: Was your maid singing at your cottage? | کیا تمھاری نوکرانی تمھارے گھر میں گا رہی تھی |
| Smith: No, it was my cousin. | نہیں وہ میری کزن تھی |
| John: Were you playing table tennis? | کیا تم ٹیبل ٹینس کھیل رہے تھے |
| Smith: Yes, I was playing with my brother. | ہاں میں اپنے بھائی کے ساتھ کھیل رہا تھا۔ |
Use of “Had”
Had is defined as to be owned something in the past era or period. The past perfect tense is constructed with the assistance of ‘had’ just as

Use of “Had been”
Had been is used in past perfect continuous that indicates that an action or event started in past and were still going on in the past.
Example.
I had been waiting there for more than four hours.

| John: Had you been playing for the last one hour yesterday? | کیا تم گزشتہ روز ایک گھنٹہ کھیل چکے تھے |
| Kim: Yes, I had been playing because of my next match. | ہاں میں کھیل چکا تھا کیونکہ میرا اگلہ میچ تھا |

| Kim:Yes, earlier we had been planning to attend the party, but I changed my plan. | ہاں پہلے ہم یہی منصوبہ بندی کر رہے تھے لیکن میں نے اپنا منصوبہ بدل لیا تھا |
